Rescheduling Cannabis: What This Means For You.

On April 23, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice officially moved state-licensed medical cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act. This is the most significant shift in federal cannabis policy in over 50 years — and it directly affects patients like you.
What this means
For decades, medical cannabis was classified alongside heroin and LSD — substances defined as having "no accepted medical use." Schedule III changes that. It places medical cannabis in the same federal category as ketamine and Tylenol with codeine: substances with recognized medical value and a lower risk profile.
In plain terms: the federal government now officially acknowledges what you and your care team already knew — that cannabis has legitimate medical use.
What this means for you as a patient
Your access doesn't change. Utah's medical cannabis program remains in effect, and your ability to purchase at Dragonfly Wellness is unaffected.
Your products don't change. Everything you rely on — the same strains, formats, and pharmacist guidance — continues as normal.
Research expands. Rescheduling removes significant federal barriers to clinical cannabis research, which means more evidence-based medicine on the horizon for patients.
What this doesn't mean
This is not federal legalization. Cannabis remains a controlled substance under federal law. Interstate commerce is still restricted, and adult-use cannabis is still under review — the DEA has a hearing scheduled for June 29 to address that separately.
